Significance

The Battle of Ad Decimum, fought on 13 September 533, was an early engagement of the Vandalic War between the Byzantine forces under Belisarius and the Vandal army under King Gelimer. The battle brought these two principal commanders into direct confrontation near the outset of the Byzantine campaign to reassert imperial authority over the former Roman province of North Africa. The forces engaged included Belisarius and his subordinates John the Armenian and Calonymus on the Byzantine side, against Gelimer and Ammatas commanding the Vandals. With a recorded Byzantine force of approximately 10,000, the engagement represented a significant commitment of imperial military strength to the North African theater.
