Significance

The Battle of Abtao was a naval engagement between a Spanish squadron and a combined Peruvian-Chilean allied fleet during the Chincha Islands War. Although Spanish gunnery proved more accurate and inflicted damage on the allied ships, the engagement remained indecisive, as the shallow waters protecting the allied anchorage prevented the Spanish from pressing a decisive action.
