Battle context

The Battle of Aba on 12 August 1881 opened the Mahdist War and established Muhammad Ahmad's movement as a credible military force from the outset. Egyptian troops who landed on Aba Island were routed by Mahdist rebels under Muhammad Ahmad, who had recently proclaimed himself the Mahdi. Of the approximately 200 Egyptian soldiers engaged, 120 became casualties—a loss rate that demonstrated the vulnerability of Egyptian forces to the insurgent force and lent immediate military credibility to Muhammad Ahmad's religious and political claims. The engagement set the terms for a conflict that would consume Egyptian authority in the Sudan over the following years.
