The Battle of Velikiye Luki opened on November 19, 1942, when Soviet Kalinin Front forces launched an offensive against the German 3rd Panzer Army with the objective of liberating Velikiye Luki. The operation was conceived as part of the northern pincer of the broader Rzhev-Sychevka Strategic Offensive Operation, placing it within a coordinated Soviet winter campaign of 1942–1943 aimed at pressuring German positions across a wide front. Soviet forces committed nearly 95,000 troops against a German garrison of approximately 50,000, yet suffered casualties exceeding 104,000 against German losses of roughly 5,000, reflecting the severe cost of offensive operations in this theater.
