Battle context

The Battle of Narva was a prolonged campaign fought between 2 February and 10 August 1944 on the strategically important Narva Isthmus, pitting the German Army Detachment 'Narwa' against the Soviet Leningrad Front. Control of the isthmus carried operational significance on the northern sector of the Eastern Front, and the engagement tied down substantial forces on both sides — approximately 123,541 German troops against a Soviet force of around 200,000. Soviet casualties reached roughly 100,000 against approximately 14,000 German losses, reflecting the difficulty of offensive operations in a constrained geographic corridor. The battle was part of the broader Soviet effort to push German forces back along the northern axis following the relief of the Leningrad siege, with commanders Govorov and Fedyuninsky pressing against the Narwa defensive line held under Frießner and Steiner.
