Battle context
The Battle of Königshügel, fought on 3 February 1864, resulted in Austrian forces under Major General Gondrecourt occupying the area in front of the Danevirke and seizing the strategically important village of Königshügel near Ober-Selk. The Danevirke was the principal Danish defensive line in Schleswig, and Austrian control of ground directly in front of it represented direct pressure on that position during the opening phase of the Second Schleswig War. Austrian forces engaged with roughly 4,500 troops against a Danish force of approximately 1,000, sustaining around 302 casualties while Danish losses ranged between 124 and 201. The seizure of Königshügel advanced the Austro-Prussian effort to breach or outflank Danish frontier defenses in Schleswig.
