Battle context

The Battle of Courtrai formed part of a two-day engagement in early May 1794 as Coalition forces attempted to recapture Courtrai, taken by the French in the opening of their 1794 Low Countries offensive. While the Duke of York turned back a French eastward advance at Willems on 10 May, York's subsequent retreat to Tournai—prompted by his underestimation of French strength—left Clerfayt's northern attack against Courtrai unsupported. French forces then turned against Clerfayt and forced his withdrawal. The outcome preserved French control of both Courtrai and Menin, consolidating the territorial gains of the Army of the North's late April operations and frustrating the Coalition's effort to reverse the French advance in the Low Countries.
