Battle context

The Baltic strategic defensive operation covered Red Army actions from 22 June to 9 July 1941 across Soviet-occupied Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, forming the northwestern theater of the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa. With German forces under von Leeb's Army Group North numbering 655,000 against a Soviet force of 786,000 under Kuznetsov and his subordinate commanders, the operation resulted in sharply asymmetric casualties: roughly 4,878 German losses against 75,202 Soviet. This disparity reflected the broader collapse of Soviet defensive cohesion in the initial weeks of Barbarossa and left Army Group North in a position to advance toward Leningrad without being halted in the Baltic region. The loss of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in under three weeks stripped the Soviet Union of the territorial buffer acquired in 1940 and exposed the northwestern approaches to the Russian interior.
