On 2 November 2021, gunmen of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara ambushed a delegation being held by the mayor of Bani-Bangou in the village of Adab-Dab, Niger. The attack killed the town mayor and 68 others.

Significance

On 2 November 2021, Islamic State in the Greater Sahara gunmen ambushed a delegation in the village of Adab-Dab, Niger, killing the town mayor of Bani-Bangou and 68 others. The targeting of a civic delegation and its mayor demonstrated ISGS's capacity and willingness to strike local governance figures and civilian gatherings in the region, consistent with the group's broader campaign to undermine state authority in the tri-border area of the Sahel. The high death toll placed it among the deadlier single incidents of the ongoing conflict in Niger.
