Significance

The Atlantic campaign of May 1794 was a series of Royal Navy Channel Fleet operations aimed at intercepting a French grain convoy sailing from the United States to France. The campaign involved commerce raiding by detached forces and two minor engagements before culminating in the fleet action of the Glorious First of June 1794, at which both fleets were badly mauled and both Britain and France claimed victory. France lost seven ships of the line while Britain lost none, giving the British a tactical edge in materiel. Strategically, however, the result favored France: the fleet engagement occupied the British long enough for the grain convoy to reach port safely, securing a supply of food critical to the French war effort and denying Britain its principal operational objective for the campaign.
