Ansariya ambush

Significance

The Ansariya ambush marked the single deadliest day for Israeli forces in Lebanon since 1985, with twelve members of the elite naval commando unit Shayetet 13 killed when a 16-man force walked into a Hezbollah ambush during a mission in the occupied south. The scale of the loss in a single engagement underscored the sustained attrition Israel faced maintaining its occupation zone, and the ability of Hezbollah's Islamic Resistance to inflict concentrated casualties on specialized Israeli units. Within the broader South Lebanon conflict, incidents of this magnitude fed mounting domestic pressure in Israel over the human cost of the occupation, which would continue until the Israeli withdrawal in 2000.
