Battle context
The Åland Offensive formed one prong of a Russian three-front invasion designed to force Sweden into the Continental System and compel the cession of Finland. Åland's strategic value lay in its proximity to Stockholm: Russian forces under Knorring intended to use the islands as a staging ground for a direct strike on the Swedish capital. Swedish commander Döbeln chose withdrawal over engagement, retreating across the ice toward Stockholm and preserving his outnumbered force—roughly 6,000 troops against a Russian strength of 17,000—at the cost of 1,750 casualties. Although the Swedish army escaped destruction, the episode illustrated the acute vulnerability of the Swedish mainland at this stage of the war. The Convention of Åland that followed halted the Russian offensive and secured a Russian withdrawal from the islands, limiting the territorial and strategic gains Moscow could extract from this axis of advance.
