Action off Calabria

Significance

The Action off Calabria was a naval engagement between the Italian Regia Marina and the British Mediterranean Fleet, fought 30 nautical miles east of Punta Stilo, Calabria. It formed part of the wider contest for control of the Mediterranean during the Second World War, pitting forces under Andrew Cunningham against those commanded by Inigo Campioni. The engagement represents an early test of rival naval power in the Mediterranean theater, where command of sea lanes held strategic consequence for supply routes and operational reach across the region.
