Battle context

The action off Punta Europa on 19 January 1799 was a minor engagement within the Anglo-Spanish War fought in the strategically sensitive waters of the Strait of Gibraltar. A Spanish squadron of 14 gunboats, with a mistico as flagship under Francisco Mourelle de la Rúa, successfully attacked a British merchant convoy despite the escort including a 74-gun ship of the line. The British force failed to protect the convoy, losing a gunboat sunk, another captured, and the convoy itself losing a ship and two brigs. Though small in scale, the action demonstrated that lighter Spanish coastal forces could effectively challenge Royal Navy escorts in confined littoral waters. Mourelle de la Rúa's success was formally recognized by his promotion to frigate captain.
