Significance

The action of 19 December 1796 occurred during the final stages of the British Mediterranean campaign, at a moment when the Royal Navy was withdrawing from the region entirely. Nelson's squadron, comprising the last British naval force remaining in the Mediterranean, was tasked with evacuating the garrison of Elba rather than contesting control of the sea. The engagement against the Spanish vanguard under Commodore Don Jacobo Stuart resulted in the temporary capture of one Spanish frigate and damage to another, but Spanish reinforcements reversed the outcome, driving off the British and recapturing the taken vessel.
