Battle context

Ukraine launched the Kherson counteroffensive on 29 August 2022 to retake Russian-occupied territory in Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts in the south. The operation committed approximately 20,000 Ukrainian troops against a Russian force estimated at 20,000 to 25,000. The counteroffensive formed a significant component of Ukraine's broader effort to reverse Russian territorial gains made during the opening phase of the full-scale invasion.
