The Southern Yemen clashes were a series of clashes in the city of Aden between the pro-Hadi government troops backed by Saudi Arabia and Southern Transitional Council forces backed by the United Arab Emirates. The Southern Transitional Council took control of Aden and Zinjibar.

Significance

The August 2019 clashes in Aden marked an open rupture within the Saudi-led coalition, pitting pro-Hadi government forces backed by Saudi Arabia against the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which had UAE backing. The STC's seizure of Aden and Zinjibar demonstrated that the anti-Houthi coalition was not a unified front but a coalition of actors with competing territorial and political objectives. Control of Aden, the internationally recognized government's seat of operations in the south, passing to the STC directly undermined the Hadi government's authority and complicated Saudi Arabia's broader war aims.
