Battle context
The 2016 Sirte offensive was the decisive engagement that ended the Islamic State's territorial presence in Libya. ISIL had captured Sirte a year earlier, establishing it as the group's principal base of operations in North Africa. GNA forces, backed by the United States, committed roughly 6,000 fighters against an ISIL garrison estimated at 2,000–2,500. The battle was characterized at the time as ISIL's 'last stand' in Libya, and the scale of casualties on both sides — the GNA suffering around 4,000 and ISIL approximately 2,500 — reflects the intensity of the fighting required to dislodge an entrenched urban force. The offensive eliminated ISIL's foothold in Sirte and effectively ended the group's organized territorial control within the country, a significant outcome in the broader international effort to contain ISIL expansion beyond Iraq and Syria during the 2014–2020 civil war period.
