2016 Nassoumbou attack

Significance

The Nassoumbou attack marked the combat debut of Ansarul Islam, Burkina Faso's first indigenous jihadist organization, which had formed only a month before the assault. Conducted alongside the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, the attack on a Burkinabe army outpost in Soum Province killed twelve soldiers and signaled that the jihadist insurgency afflicting the broader Sahel region had acquired a locally rooted armed actor. The emergence of a homegrown movement distinguished this phase of the conflict from earlier cross-border spillover, indicating that conditions within Burkina Faso itself were generating militant recruitment and organization.
